Studying Online

Course Modalities
Regent courses are offered in one of three modalities: Onsite & Online (Dual-Delivery), Online Only (Asynchronous), or Onsite Only.
- Onsite & Online (Dual-Delivery) courses are offered in real time to online students who join the class by Zoom and can interact directly with their classmates on campus. (Note: When registering for a course that is offered both onsite and online, be sure to select the online option. The course code should have “ONL” next to it.)
- Online Only (Asynchronous) courses feature a combination of pre-recorded lectures, live meetings with the course professor (if time zone differences prevent you from attending, you’ll receive access to a recording), and written interactions on Moodle. The precise blend of these elements can be found in each course’s syllabus.
- Onsite Only courses are not accessible online.
Technical Requirements
To take a course online, you’ll need access to a personal computer and a reliable internet connection. Live online class sessions are held on Zoom, and so you should download this software and test it before joining a class. In order to participate in classes, you should have a working webcam and microphone, and be able to connect to class from a private room without distractions.
For information on how to access course readings, research materials, and so on, see Accessing Course Resources below.
Registration & Online Access
If a course is offered both onsite and online, students must register for the online section of the course to gain online access. Normally, online access is given via Zoom.
Zoom link sharing is prohibited. This includes viewing a course in a group with people who have not registered in the course’s online section. Zoom access sharing may result in the student being dropped from the class.
Registering for an online section counts towards the online credit limit in the student’s program.
Temporary Online Access for Onsite Students
Normally, students registered in the onsite section of a course will not receive any online access. This includes access to course recordings. Exceptions may be made at the course instructor's discretion, only if the course already has an online section, including but not limited to the following reasons:
- Illness or injury of the student
- Illness or injury of a student's dependent
- Emergency childcare issues
Students who have been granted temporary online access are expected to return to attending the course onsite as soon as they are able, at which point their online access will be withdrawn.
Students will not normally be given temporary online access due to:
- Personal and work scheduling conflicts
- Church work
- Providing hospitality
- Vacation
Students who need to change their registration from onsite to online during the term may appeal to the Registrar to change their registration. Online access fees may apply, and the course will then count toward the student’s online credit limit.
Course Recordings
A course instructor may choose to record their course if it already has an online section. Recordings will normally only be accessible to students in the online section of the course who cannot reasonably be expected to attend the course live. Students should contact the course instructor to request permission to access recordings.
Grounds for accessing course recordings may include:
- Time zone differences
- An unavoidable scheduling conflict between courses required in a student's program
- Illness or injury of the student
- Illness or injury of a student's dependent
- Emergency childcare issues
Grounds that will not normally be considered valid for receiving access to recordings include:
- Personal review of course material
- Personal and work scheduling conflicts
- Church work
- Providing hospitality
- Vacation
- Failing to anticipate course workload
If a course is recorded, students will be notified via the course syllabus. Wherever possible, students in recorded courses may choose to sit where they cannot be recorded in the classroom or turn off their camera if they are participating online. Recordings are normally deleted at the end of each term and will not be posted outside of the course Moodle page or used for another class, including a subsequent year of the same class.
Students are not normally permitted to record lectures privately. For exceptions, students must seek permission to record from the instructor or through academic accommodations via UBC. If a student is permitted to make a personal recording of a class, the instructor will notify other students that a recording is being made without revealing the individual making the recording. Such recordings are only for personal academic use, and not for distribution of any kind.
Students are not permitted to distribute course recordings, including, but not limited to, watching recordings with someone not permitted to view course recordings, link sharing, or posting recordings online. Unauthorized distribution of recordings may result in the student losing access to course recordings and being dropped from the course.
Online Credit Limits
We believe that students benefit immeasurably, both academically and spiritually, by studying as part of our on-campus community. At the same time, we recognize that many students need the flexibility of online study to make completing a program possible. For that reason, Regent allows students in most programs to complete up to 50 percent of their program credits online.
The credit limit for online courses within each program is as follows:
MATS | 30 credits |
MACS | 21 credits |
GradDipCS | 12 credits |
MDiv | 39 credits |
MALTS | 0 credits* |
ThM | 6 credits |
*MALTS is a low-residency program that requires brief but intensive periods of onsite study.
Note: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, classes taken online between March 2020 and the end of April 2023 are not counted towards a student's online credit total.
United States Residents
Important Note: Regent College is not authorized to offer online courses in the American states listed below due to legal barriers imposed by those states. Please contact us at [email protected] if you reside in one of these states and want to take an online course.

Accessing Course Materials
Many of the assigned readings and other resources you will need to complete course assignments are available electronically though Moodle or our library's electronic holdings. You may also be able to order hard-copy textbooks from the Regent Bookstore.
Moodle
Most Regent courses have a Moodle page that hosts various resources for all students. Short assigned readings such as journal articles and book chapters can usually be downloaded from Moodle. You can access Moodle using your Regis Login.
Allison Library
Regent's library provides access to a wide range of electronic resources, including online databases, journals, and ebooks. Click below to access the library guides to these materials. You may also find these video tutorials helpful.
Regent Bookstore
The Regent Bookstore (located on our campus) stocks the required textbooks for most Regent courses. If you can't shop in person, the Bookstore may be able to mail your textbooks to you. Call 1-604-228-1820 or email [email protected] to make arrangements.
I started at Regent in 2020, so my education has taken place almost entirely online. Despite the fact that I wasn't able to attend in person, I found the community at Regent to be a real blessing. From classes to small group meetings.... It's just been great. And it has shaped me.”
