A Message from President Paul Spilsbury
... like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither ... (Psalm 1:3)
Psalm 1 likens the blessed person to a tree planted by a stream. This image has been on my mind in recent months as I’ve asked myself what Regent must do to be like this tree. My answer has two parts: We must have roots, and we must live. Your generosity will help Regent flourish like a rooted and living tree that bears good fruit. Would you make a gift today?
Rooted
What does it mean for us to be rooted? What should we be rooted in?
We must be rooted in the enduring wisdom of the Scriptures. We study and meditate on God’s word so that its story and teaching take hold of our souls and transform our very selves.
We must be rooted in the great tradition of our faith, the legacy of Christ-followers from different centuries, continents, and vocations who have grappled with the issues of life and shared their wisdom.
We must be rooted in our particular history as a community. Regent’s is a story of faithful disciples of Jesus who had an idea and persisted against all odds to bring it to life.
Regent is blessed with deep roots. It has been nurtured by many gardeners—those who gave their love, time, and treasure to see this community flourish. Regent needs the same type of nourishment today and in the years to come.
Living
A tree with strong roots is full of life, nourishing the world around it. How can Regent be like such a tree?
We will stand. A tree with its roots sunk deeply into the riverbank is upright and unbowed. We must stand firm in our faith in Christ, our trust in the Father, and our desire to be led by the Spirit.
We will grow. A rooted and living tree is dynamic and vital. Regent’s deep roots must nurture new shoots and branches as we serve God under constantly changing circumstances.
We will be fruitful. We will see this fruit in the lives of students and alumni, in reflections of God’s character and expressions of Christ’s virtue. We will see God's people doing God’s work throughout the world.
To do these things, Regent needs your help. We need your help to stand. Your help to grow. Your help to cultivate good fruit in the lives of students.
Rooted and Living for the Sake of the World
Jesus once described the kingdom of God as a tree that grows from a tiny seed to a shelter for all the birds of the air. Regent, too, is a shelter. It exists to feed, nurture, and equip those who take gather here, nourishing them as they prepare to serve others.
Yet for a tree to nourish others, it must be nourished itself. Trees in a forest need good soil. Regent College needs your financial support.
Regent's fiscal year ends on April 30, and we need your help to finish strong. Would you make a gift today?
