Seminar: Jewish Backgrounds to the New Testament
Course Description
Understanding the world in which Jesus and then the apostles walked entails knowing the Old Testament, but it also entails paying attention to the cultural shifts that happened in the four hundred years between the last prophet and John the Baptist. Reading widely in the Second Temple literature can help the student of the New Testament understand some of the cultural shifts that shaped the world of the earliest Christians. There are many places where having a greater knowledge of the Second Temple environment and history can help the reader understand far more about Jesus and the mission and ministry of the apostles that would otherwise likely be missed. It is expected that students are familiar with the Old and New Testament literature, and be ready to converse accordingly. This course has a maximum enrollment of 12 students.
