OT Seminar: Divine Hospitality
Course Description
Christian ethics has given increased attention to recovering the practice of hospitality, but the study of its foundation in divine hospitality is often only afforded a surface treatment. Furthermore, this is typically disproportionately rooted in New Testament texts, leaving Old Testament passages concerning a theology of hospitality underexamined. While the biblical prototype for divine hospitality dawns with creation in Genesis 1, this theme is pervasive throughout the Old Testament. Key texts, like the divine visitation in Genesis 18, God as eschatological host in Joel 3:18, and God as cosmic host in Job 38—39, will be examined in order to explore this recurrent thread. In this seminar, we will determine how this theme is significant for Old Testament theology and extends to ethics.
