Course Description

This course aims to further student competence in the exegesis and interpretation of the Old Testament. It presupposes knowledge of the basic considerations and tools of exegesis (as introduced in BIBL 503), a growing awareness of the history of criticism (BIBL 600), and a sound grasp of the grammar and syntax of biblical Hebrew.

The textual focus of the class will be on laments throughout the Old Testament, which provide ample opportunity to explore the complex intersection of issues related to history, literature, ethics, and theology that confront interpreters. Additionally, it addresses the “costly loss of lament” that Brueggemann pointed out in 1986, which continues to leave churches ill-equipped to model how to navigate the breadth and complexity of human experience in faith.

NOTE: This course has a maximum enrollment of 20 students.
