Please be sure to review all information provided by government sources, as policies may occasionally change.
For additional information about Canadian student aid, see the Government of Canada’s Education Planning and Student Aid website.
Eligibility
You must enroll in a minimum of 9 credit hours per term over the loan period. Loans are available for the Fall and Winter terms only. Being on academic probation may affect eligibility.
When to Apply
The process of applying for Canadian student loans normally takes six to eight weeks. If you plan to start your program in September, you should apply for loans by May or June.
How to Apply
If you're a BC resident, you can apply for student loans through the StudentAid BC website.
If you're a Canadian from outside BC, you can apply for student loans through the province where you have lived for a minimum of twelve consecutive months, excluding time spent in full-time studies. Search for your province here.
Please Note: Regent's Financial Aid Officer is the only person authorized to sign your loan forms. Please get in touch to make an appointment. Students who are unable to visit Regent’s campus should email [email protected] for specific instructions to complete the process without an in-person meeting.
Student Loans – United States
Please be sure to review all information provided by government sources, as policies may occasionally change.
For additional information about US student aid, see the Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid website. This website provides useful information about US student loans in general. Note, however, that students applying for US loans to attend a school outside the United States are subject to specific regulations that may not be reflected in all site content. Please be sure to follow the instructions provided below to ensure the completion of all the steps involved in setting up a loan for your Regent studies.
Eligibility
You must be registered in a minimum of 6 on-campus credit hours per term. Funding is only available for Fall and Winter terms. Being on academic probation may affect eligibility.
Note: You are not permitted to take any courses online while receiving a US student loan. Contact the Financial Aid Officer for details.
When to Apply
For studies beginning in September, applications should be made by May or June, as the process normally takes six to eight weeks.
Note: US loans cannot be set up until after June 15 each year.
Amount of Funding Available
As a US citizen, you may apply for unsubsidized Stafford student loans. Graduate students are eligible for as much as $20,500 (USD) in unsubsidized loans. Unsubsidized loans accrue interest while you’re in school, although you can choose to make interest payments while you're still studying.
Graduate students are also eligible to apply for a Graduate Plus loan (subject to a credit check). The loan amount you are eligible to receive for the academic year is determined by the school, based on your cost of attendance and the amount of your Stafford loan.
The only private loan currently available to students at a foreign school is the Smart Loan from Sallie Mae. To apply for a private loan, you must apply directly to the lender and then send a copy of your signed Promissory Note to Regent’s Financial Aid Officer.
How to Apply
Please be sure to follow these steps carefully. You’re welcome to contact [email protected] if you have any questions about how Regent handles US student loans.
- Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, available online.
- To prevent delays in the application process, be sure to complete all questions fully.
- In “Section H: Information Release,” the school code for Regent College is G10675.
- Fill out the Master Promissory Note.
- If this is your first loan at Regent College, you will need to do Entrance Counselling.
- Complete the US Student Loan Checklist (PDF) and return it to Regent's Financial Aid Officer.
- Once the Financial Aid Officer at Regent receives this information, the Officer will process the loan and let you know how much you will receive and when. The money will be put into your student account. Cheques will then be cut for the balance of the loan minus the tuition and fees. Please note that the disbursement date is the date that the funds can be requested by the school. It can take up to a week for the funds to transfer to the school's bank account and then to your student account. You will receive notification when the balance is available to be picked up.
- The application process may take up to eight weeks.
Please Note: Regent's Financial Aid Officer is the only person authorized to sign your loan forms. Please get in touch to make an appointment. Students who are unable to visit Regent’s campus should email [email protected] for specific instructions to complete the process without an in-person meeting.
Additional Information
US student loan applicants and recipients should review the following documents, which contain important information about Regent's administration of US student loans.
Part-Time Employment
Many students hold part-time jobs that help them pay for tuition and living expenses. Working part-time during your Regent studies may help reduce—or in some cases even eliminate—your reliance on loans.
That said, the vast majority of students can't realistically expect to pay for tuition and living expenses based on part-time work alone. As a full-time student, it's best to think of part-time employment as a supplement to your overall financial plan.
Students coming from outside of Canada should be aware that while many international students (and their spouses) are able to work during their time in Canada, there are various legal restrictions on the types of employment open to them. For additional information, see our Working in Canada page.
Employment at Regent
Regent College employs dozens of Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Student Employees (SEs) each year. TAs typically work with faculty members in academic or administrative capacities. SE roles vary greatly, ranging from keeping our building clean, to helping library patrons, to doing database maintenance. You can learn more on our Student Employment page.
External Scholarships
Students are encouraged to investigate outside sources of financial support. Many external (i.e., non-Regent) scholarships are posted on a financial aid notice board at Regent. You can also research scholarship sources online and through your local library. Koerner Library on the UBC campus has a large section on scholarship searches.
Personal Donor Support
Individuals and organizations may make donations to cover some or all of the tuition and fees of a specific Regent student. The donor can pay directly into a student's account via:
- Debit card (in person only),
- Cash (in person only),
- Cheque made out to Regent College, with an accompanying letter identifying the student to receive the support.
The money will be used only for your tuition fees unless otherwise stated. If they would like the money to be used for anything other than tuition (e.g., books, living costs, etc.), they will need to send us a signed letter authorizing that usage.
To arrange support of this type, you will need to provide your supporter with your name, Regent ID, and any specific financial information they may need. (Note that we will not provide your supporter with any information about your account without your written permission).
Tax Implications:
- Donations intended for individuals are not tax-deductible for donors. (Donations to the College as an institution are tax-deductible for Canadian taxpayers.)
- Students who receive support from an organization (e.g., a church) are required to declare this as income for tax purposes. Support received from individuals does not need to be declared as income, as an individual's donation to another individual is treated as a private gift.
